I need a webserver that can have something like 500MB. And something like 5000 GB, do you think it is possible?
No one has a 500MB hard drive around for this. What you need is a high bandwidth server. I would focus on BW, Price, HD, and RAM.
i mean a 500mb: storage and a 5000gb bandwidth
No one is going to host anything that eats up that much bandwidth on a shared server. Things will go slow. You will need your own server with like a 100MBPS unmetered port.
Yup. You’re gonna need a dedicated. I’m pretty happy with ev1servers.net. You’re not going to need a 100mbps connection - that seems very overkill. Two 10mps connections should do it.
that seems to be a good website. unfortunately the high bandwidth solution that I want is unavailable - sold out. any other good websites like that?
The sold out warning is a little misinformative. Sold out means that it isn’t instantly availiable - they can still custom build it for you - the only difference is that it takes a few days to get it built.
I agree that a dedicated server is the best solution. We manage several client servers pushing that and more bandwidth per month. However before you go jumping into an EV1 (unmanaged) server or any unmanaged server for that matter make sure you know and understand the ramifications:
Are you skilled at securing the same?
Are you prepared to manage the same?
What do you think these entail?
I’d definately recommend a managed dedicated server. I’d also recommend taking a look at getting a server with dedicated unmetered bandwidth, somewhere in the range of 20mbps.
unmetered? does it mean unlimit bandwidth?
do you know any good hosts that offer that?
No, not quite. Unlimited bandwidth doesn’t exist. Any host claiming that is lying.
It’s unmetered, not unlimited. A 10mbps unmetered connection means that your server has a 10mbps connection that you can use as you wish. I.e. it’s limited, but not by bandwidth per month, but by bandwidth per second instead.
I’m thinking on buying a dedicated server from amen.
Their AMEN 2800 (10Mbps) seems good to me. Tell me what you think:Link: http://www.amenworld.com/static/index_1026.html
I think some people need a brick to fall on their heads before they realize there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth! Now if you think them folk are going to let you push an average of 5TB’S every month for the same price then go right ahead and sign yourself up for a one year committment!
of course I wont have the 5TB. I’ll have the 10Mpbs port unmetered as a limit. That’s about 3TB, at least is what I’m understanding from all this conversation. But what you think about the server hardware, do you think it would be able to have let’s say 50 users downloading a 200MB at one time?
I’ve heard about limiting the download and making a conga line, is it possible?
You’re going to experience bottlenecks trying to get even 3TB thru a 10mbps port. During peak times as much as half of your traffic will not get out. Especially once you start pushing 400+GB per month. Your best bet is a 100mbps port capped at 10-20mbps.
10Mbit Un-metered - You’ll actually only get about 9Mbit/s of real usage out of it, as you approach 10Mbit/s at peak times, TCP Back Off will kick in, and drop the transfer rates dramatically, then slowly build back up to 10Mbit/s again and then drop them back again etc. etc. unless RED is used, which I doubt. The most you can expect to get then is around 2700GB per month, the theoretical maximum being around 3050GB per month.
As for 50 users downloading a 200MB file at the same time, easy one to work out, if those users are downloading on 1Mbit/s DSL/Cable etc. then you’ve got 50 * 1Mbit/s, so you need to be able to burst to 50Mbit/s for them to be able to download at their full capacity.
