Anybody have any experiences with Cihost? I’m launching a site real soon and am anticipating having to buy a dedicated server. The site will have discussion boards and MP3 downloads..so it should be pretty busy if I can promote it.
Specifically I was looking at the Unix Dedicated Unmetered #1 and #2. Here are the specs for number one:
Unix Dedicated Unmetered
Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz, 1GB RAM, 2×80 GB IDE, 10Mbps Ethernet UNMETERED (~2600GB monthly transfer), 256 IPs
The only thing different between #1 and #2 is that #2 has a 100Mbps connection.
They seem to have been around a while, anybody have any comments?
I know that they did get sued by Microsoft besides that I have not heard any bad news about them. http://www.hostingdiscussion.com/showthread.php?t=2086
Best Regards.
I’ve heard nothing but bad news about them. I would recommend shopping around for another provider.
Anybody have any suggestions on hosting companies?
What is your budget ?
I really don’t have my budget worked out yet. Just getting prices of some good plans. I should be able to pay up to $300.00 a month.
I found ServerMatrix..they any good?
We use server4you.com here at my day job and so far they’ve been stellar. I also have seen a lot of users here recommend serverMatrix so they may be worth investigating.
By looking at WHT they seem to have had some issues with their server being down. Shouldn’t be too much of a problem because I can get my money back if I have too many problems.
Other than that they seem to be pretty good. I’ll keep researching different hosts because it will probably be a few months before I need to upgrade.
How do they measure that 10Mbps = 2600GB if used 24/7? 10Mbps used 24/7 = 3240GB.
and it includes 256 IP addresses?
Use Cihost and you could regret it for a long time!
Do a search on google.com, webhostingtalk.com, and even these forums.
Just lots of horror stories.
I was with ci host on a dedicated server - redhat - for a few years. Then there was a dos attack.
Without letting me know they pulled the server offline. It was offline for 4 days!
Never a phone call to let me know what was happening. In the end i found the whole in the server not they.
Once you sign up its very difficult to cancel. I’m convinced they make it that way.
Stay away from them.
I’m on rack space right now. the support is great.
I would definitely go with ServerMatrix.com
One of the reasons why I’m on this forum now is that I currently have 3 servers with CIHost. I’ve had nothing but problems with them since the very beginning. You name it, I’ve heard it. Serious routing problems with Texas that made me pull my servers out from there. They blamed the routing on their upstream providers and made no efforts to even look into the issue even when I presented them with plenty of information showing them the exact problem area.
The support in Chicago is horrible. They’ve gone through I don’t know how many managers for their Chicago DC. When I call there and have anything to ask other than for a reboot (if someone’s even there) they tell me to call Dallas and hang up. It’s very disappointing… and I wouldn’t get locked into any annual contract with them.
I’ve seen my servers go down for days because of “power issues” and then another time they were down for half a day because of an electrical problem inside the DC that they said an electrician was working on. What else? Oh yes.. they sent me an email a few days before saying they were going to be moving my servers. Then they didn’t even realize that one of them was down. They figured it was a problem with the server itself. After hours of deliberation they determined that it was the network cable they were using. Their network itself has had countless problems plaguing it where it would go down altogether from a DDoS attack or a problem with some of the servers they were hosting apparently being infected with some worm etc.
I could tell you so many stories, but basically I just want to get the hell out of that situation as fast as I possibly can. You live and you learn.. and I would NEVER recommend them to anyone. It’s tossing the dice when you host with them. I would warn people not to use them… and the guy that referred me to them hasn’t stopped apologizing to me since the first time I started having problems with them. Oh, and the last time I headed over to the DC itself… they had hard drives, memory, motherboards, processors, network cards, etc…. all over the place. On the floor in front of the entryway etc etc…. and their manager that they finally found out what he was doing and fired was hosting at least 9 FTP servers from their network. It has just been… a nightmare. I’m starting to get the shakes just thinking about it all…
Just like in the anti-drug commercials… I would recommend one thing only.
Just say NO.
Is CIHOST still in business?
pretty sure. They are certainly tied up with lots of legal issues.
