I’m looking out for a dedicated server. Have looked at esecuredata, and they seem to be a lot cheaper and offer pretty nice machines.
Has anyone who has hosted with them got any comments?
Also, they use web CP. which doesnt look that great. Has anyone got any comments on that?
ok..let me update this post a little bit. I reckon it would be very helpful if we could build up a sort of guideline for host shopping - like things to look for.
I’ll get the ball starting
Shared host:
- look for a server status link (see if u can see their uptime track record)
- Get independent opinions from current clients
- Check that they have adequate support. I like chat support, but its important that the person you are chatting with can actually help you!
- ping them, tracert them. check response times.
- try find a site which is hosted with them and monitor it (webCEO is a good option here)
- check if they have a money back gaurentee.
- hope for the best.
With a dedicated server i am sure things are a bit more complex. I’ve never had one, but wound be interested in knowing how u go about).
Some things which i would look at off the cuff:
- support
- is it managed or not
- network connectivity
- firewall and security issues, like do u have to manage the firewall and stuff
- do they do celerons? (apparently that is bad)
…
so what do u guys look for?
for people that get interested in esecuredata: users saying good things about them were banned frmo WHT. Also do a search on their company name plus “webmaster forum” …
Good smoth and look for reviews before signing with them
I called them last week about a server. They were upfront and honest about who they were, how much support they had..etc. They are a small company. Their tech support consists of 4 people, but someone is always there around the clock for reboots and other critical issues that may arise. The sales support staff that I spoke with did point out that at the pricing they offer, it really doesn’t include any other support besides what they have listed at their site. Bare bones people. Server reboots and reinstallation of OS’s. Nothing else. If you’re thinking of going to an unmanaged dedicated server, these guys are probably the cheapest you’ll find. But you better be a sys admin or have one that can doing everything else for you when you need to. Cpanel installation is extra, make sure you see the other addons they offer. I have no experience with them myself, but I still may go with them in the future. Hope this helps.
I have just signed up with them. My server should be ready in a few days. I will post my experiences with them, so far my emails have been answered promptly.
I decided to take the chance and try them out…being poor their prices looked pretty darn good, but of couse such low prices makes you sceptic.
I’ll try and remember to post again once I know more.
Thinking about it i decided that i prob dont have the expertise to run my own linux server yet. I have gone with a rackforce VPS solution. the idea being that i can upgrade seamlessly to a managed dedicated server when i can afford it!
Hi, could you share your experience using its services? I’m really interested in this dedicated hosting.
Hi there,
I use them. So far no complaints. It took about 10 days to get the server setup, however they quoted me that before I purchased it to let me know.
You are on your own with it in terms of support. They will set you up with whichever OS you want and give you the root login/pass. If you need help with setting anything up, you can contact one of their consulting companies who did excellent work for me.
For the price, i don’t think you can beat it… plus they are close to me, in Vancouver.
I am waiting on my server still, but they’ve got until Thursday and warned that it would probably take the full 10 days.
Yep, that’s really true.
That’s why I still search for information about it even I noticed it was banned by some other forums……BTW, it’s really interesting….
Three guys starting a hosting company, swearing they will never provide any technical support, but only OS base installs and reboots.
What they need to do daily is to surf online in the data center, waiting for orders and answer them.
Aren’t their lives quite enjoying?
Maybe I’ll start a similar company like this (after I’ve got enough $$$ to start). So, watch out!
It sounds like they probably just have a cage or something in Serenity Network’s data center…. not really too sure.
I’ve been using eSecuredata for three months now, and it CERTAINLY is not for the timid… You get a baseline server in your favorite flavor of *nix and are left to the wind… though not as much as you may think. They DID spend the time to help me get DNS up and running properly, and helped me track down some e-mail issues.
For the application I’m using it for (www.classicbattletech.com - site pushes over 300gigs/mo all by itself) it’s the IDEAL solution at an incredible price. I’ve got no real complaints about bandwidth or uptime…
I just do not recommend anyone ‘green’ think about using it. You really need to know what you are doing - linux nubes need not apply.
But if you want a good server at a great price, with total control over every aspect of it’s software - they are unbeatable. Basically it’s like all the advantages of a co-lo, without the disadvantage of owning your own hardware. (there is SOMETHING to be said for renting, like if it breaks, it’s on THEIR heads to replace the parts)
That they just started offering a unmetered 1mpbs connect for $50 over the base package (which offers 1000gigs/mo) is just icing on the cake.
It seems only when they get the order, they begin to purchase the server and put it in the data center and install OS and so on.
